For most people losing weight is a trying experience. Trying every diet that comes along, trying what each and every weight loss expert says you should do, trying to stay away from the “bad” foods, trying to exercise, trying to eat the ‘right” foods, trying to stick to the plans and goals you’ve set for yourself, trying again to lose the weight you regained after the last time you tried to lose it.

Yes, it’s about trying, trying, and trying some more. Many people who are "trying to lose weight" say they are doing so because they need to for health reasons, or they have to because their doctor told them so, or they should lose it because everyone tells them they should. Certainly there are times when your physician says your health, even your very life, is dependent on losing weight. When someone who is told this loses weight and keeps it off, it is because that person has had an internal shift of values and has decided their health is more important than their old relationship to food and exercise. They have stopped trying and started doing.

'Trying' is a word used to describe the period of time in which a person is experimenting with something to decide if they will commit and actually do what is necessary to behave in a new way. 'Commitment' is about doing something that is extremely important and for which the reasons underlying that importance can be clearly stated. Lasting change requires a commitment to action based on what you personally desire for your life, what you personally have determined to be of value. Commitment cannot be imposed as a 'should'.

In almost every situation the words should, have to, must, need to and got to are associated with trying, and are ultimately de-motivators, stopping lasting change from happening by immediately, or eventually, creating an inner rebelliousness that says, “No one can tell me what I have to do!”  And, no one includes you saying these words in an attempt to get yourself to do something.

Rather, in order to stop trying to lose weight, and begin to do it for keeps, ask yourself what you value about changing your body and your health.  What do you want, desire, prefer and/or value that will be a result of making a change in your relationship to food and to exercise?

Make a list of what is important to you and remind yourself daily of what you intend to do for your life and how come it is important to you to make the changes you have decided you want to make. Then you can stop having a trying time and start doing weight loss for keeps.

Good to See/Read; Similar to 'Strategies for Lasting Change'

It is a pleasure, Paula, to have you writing here at the Lumigrate forums -- it was two years ago we were discussing the topic of 'resistance' that I foresaw was going to be a critical piece to anyone finding the website which didn't have a name yet.  (Remember when it was being submitted for trademarking and we joked that it was 'We-don't-have-a-name-a-Grate'?)  Your response was to whiz into the Lumigrate recording studio at your scheduled time, dressed in Lumigrate colors, your hair and makeup done just as we see them in the video (beautifully) and you were 'on'.  I have a sense that someone in the room that day's life changed for the better that day -- hopefully 'for keeps'.

For anyone who likes what Dr King has written here and wants to have a 'virtual session' at a fraction of the cost of a 1:1 session ($20 to download), you can find her with the others at the 'Video' tab at Lumigrate. The link, for your ease, is www.lumigrate.com/catalog/seminars.  Due to upcoming/incoming sponsorship funds, I am hoping we will be able to announce a reduction in the cost per download to be more in line with the price of renting a movie download now; keeping up with the time as the Internet industry changes is a huge challenge for us at Lumigrate.com but it's exciting to be part of it, and a pleasure to have you be on board.

Dr King was the first person I recorded on the eve of my 48th birthday in April of 2008, in my office at the Integrative Medicine Center of Western Colorado.  I hope we'll be able to make THAT professional-level seminar presentation you provided available on Lumigrate very soon as well, as I think it would help a lot of providers in the English-speaking world that Lumigrate serves today.  ~~ Mardy

Re: A 'Trying' Time: Making Weight Loss or Any Change 'for ...

Dr. King, I couldn't agree more with "When someone who is told this loses weight and keeps it off, it is because that person has had an internal shift of values and has decided their health is more important than their old relationship to food and exercise. They have stopped trying and started doing."

Although this didn't fit within the context of your writing we both believe what Dr. Margaret Mead once said: "It is easier to change a persons religion than it is to change their diet". But understanding this allows us as health practitioners to understand at an emotional level what the person attempting to lose weight is going through.

People don't need our intellectual support as much as they need our emotional support. Emotional support will help move them along the continuum  from trying to doing.

I also believe deeply that it is very important to help the body adjust to new healthier foods a dieter needs by feeding their bodies more fruits and vegetables. This can get their health snow ball rolling in the right direction. Hopefully for a lifetime.

Mardy's Note: 12/8/11: The distributor who provided this content on Lumigrate at my encouragement and with my support in the past has messaged through Lumigrate to request the content he provided be removed as he doesn't wish to participate in this 'effort' anymore. The forums at Lumigrate are a social media format, similar to facebook. That would be like contacting facebook and saying "take everything I ever commented on or posted off". Many conversations and exchanges of other providers are woven in 'threads' and that would be disrespectful to the other forum participants who gave their time and energy to participate in the 'social' media of Lumigrate's forums. However, I have changed the UserName to be Juice Plus 007, removed the photo, and am posting this in the signature and removing the contact information that is set up in the signature in order to make it clear this contributor no longer wants to be 'connected' with the posts. Additionally, as time permits, I will work to replace the content with similar but that will entail selecting another person distributing for Juice Plus. I wanted JP represented on Lumigrate because it is a well-known company based on the concept of supplementing fruits and vegetables. Also because JP reaches many people due to it's vast number of distributors; there are 10 in Grand Junction, population 50k or so. In addition to removing the information in the signature for contact, I have changed the username and email address associated with it to route to me if anyone were to send a "private message" to JP007. My first step will be to edit out any internal contact information/links to the requestor. I guess you call this an "imposter"? Grins! I hope this is a clear statement for the users of Lumigrate to view related YOUR forum area and how I manage it. After all, it is YOUR health education (and mine) I'm advocating for but Lumigrate, at the end of the day, is my website. I care a great deal about the users of Lumigrate feeling they are being treated well and providing a forum area which is a FUN place to come get valid, progressive information in a streamlined way when searching for health information our audience of consumers is seeking.

This forum is provided to allow members of Lumigrate to share information and ideas. Any recommendations made by forum members regarding medical treatments, medications, or procedures are not endorsed by Lumigrate or practitioners who serve as Lumigrate's medical experts.
