I have long used a well-known 'alternative' brand of toothpaste, which provides both fluoride-added and fluoride-free versions, because I thought it was good for you.  I recently came across a very simple toothpaste recipe that I thought sounded good.  So I went and read what was in my commercial, 'health food' toothpaste and was shocked!  It had titanium dioxide and sodium laurel phosphate.  OMG!  What crap!

So I decided to make my own, and it turned out great! So I'm sharing the recipe and what brands of of ingredients I prefer with you here.  I just had a routine 6 month dental check-up, and I had the best report ever.

When you use this recipe, understand it will feel and taste different than the commercial toothpastes you've been accustomed to, so prepare yourself.  The coconut oil makes it feel oily, the baking soda is a little abrasive at first, but very quickly it becomes a very smooth liquid in your mouth.

Benefits:
1) Coconut oil:  great base to mix the other ingredients in.  It helps as a medium chain triglyceride to help you process fat in your body better, when consumed, by the way, and we do end up swallowing a bit of what we use for tooth brushing and oral care.

2) Baking soda:  It freshens your breath, whitens your teeth and raises your body's pH to a more healthy alkaline range. Be sure when it's something going on or in your body that it is 'aluminum-free'; this is a big selling point so brands that are will promote that typically.

3) Peppermint oil:  Freshens breath and helps with digestion and a multitude of other things

All the good, none of the bad!

Natural Toothpaste: Mix well:
  • 2 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 Tbsp baking soda/sodium bicarbonate (aluminum-free)
  • 6-8 Drops of peppermint oil
  • stevia powder if desired, for sweetening

Notes: I use doTERRA essential oils for the peppermint oil, and I add 1 drop of doTERRA's "OnGuard" to prevent infections.  This does not need to be refrigerated.  Store in a small container.  Use daily. (Naturally, if it is not used consistently, you'll want to dispose of it, oils do go rancid, etc.)

Maybe make a batch and divide it up for each person in the family to have their own supply.  And believe me, it is white as it can be without any additives.  Simple, easy, healthy, inexpensive!  Your body will thank you! The environment / Earth will thank you! And therefore, I thank you! If you're 'into this', please print and share this with other members of your health care team, including those in the dental industry; they are rapidly catching on and up with the help of their patients, the educated consumers, related to these concepts and information.

I encourage readers of Lumigrate to refer to the area about fluoride to investigate related to if you want to have fluoride or fluoride-free toothpaste. I prefer, for reasons you'll see presented by my colleagues here at Lumigrate, fluoride-free.

Mardy's Note: GRATE setup, Dr S, thank you! Here's a link what our holistic dentist expert, Dr Jim Kennedy, provided about fluoride, I highly recommend people starting there to learn more about the "great fluoride debate": www.lumigrate.com/forum/fluoride-dilemma

From Dr Kennedy, I learned of his colleague and friend Dr Rothchild, a biologic dentist practicing in Durango, Colorado, whose website information I featured and 'setup up' on another topic in the same forum because he presents equally the pro-fluoride resources and the anti-fluoride resources. Follow to: www.lumigrate.com/forum/resource-holistic-dentistry-durangocom-has-both-perspectives-about-flouride-fyi

An independent resource I like to investigate more about doTERRA: www.keeperofthehome.org/2013/01/my-review-of-doterra-essential-oils-and-how-much-of-a-difference-does-quality-really-make.html

And another independent doTERRA resource about OnGuard and other things related to doTERRA: doterralife.wordpress.com/2011/10/10/be-on-guard/

In looking for a photo about teeth, I chose this one of from 2011, our year using the Yenta's gifted PeaceFleece for fibromyalgia awarenessmovement where I was cracking up with movement therapist/YogaDance expert Kohava Howard. This photo represents the many things that keep changing over time at Lumigrate; both Yenta and Kohava have been off on new adventures in 2013. Kohava will be moving to Buffalo, New York next month and leaving western Colorado a better place for having been here for the years she was. The beauty of Lumigrate is -- we will be connected via the Internet if she wishes to plug in from New York! Onward and Upward!

Thanks to all who contribute to Lumigrate in one way or another -- our readers most of all, who we hope apply what they learn and share with others when appropriate. GRATE recipe, Dr Spurlock, thank you! We could call this the doTERRA It Yourself Toothpaste Recipe!  ~~ Mardy
