WELCOME to ALL who participated in the 2013/6th Annual Sweet Heart Run and Health Expo, put on by the City of Fruita and Family Health West on Saturday, February 9, 2013.

We hope your trip from learning about Lumigrate.com to this blog post was virtually effortless. This will hopefully help YOU learn more about us. QUESTIONS/comments/etc? Call me, Lumigrate's # is (removed by Mardy, as number changed in 2015.....)(see the 'About' tab for updated contact information --- the 'Contact Us' tab is not as user-friendly for Mardy to update like the 'About' tab).

What is The Grate Groove of the Grand Valley? It's a 'local extention' of the work of Lumigrate.com, created by me, Mardy Ross, after long career occupational therapy after getting roots in health education. Lumigrate's providers now span the globe, but the local ones you will find among those listed below. We are all functional medicine/integrative medicine providers, believers and promoters, working to 'progressing' things along in the world of health care.

My work experience preceeding getting into health care in 1992, was for eight years assisting the research team that lead to the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, partly through collaborations of 'conflicting' parties in the petroleum and power generation industries and environmental scientists, policy makers, and nonprofit groups.

I simply figured that if some of the solid and progressive providers of health-related services and products came together in a group to get to know each other, we can better refer patients to providers who can most effectively help them, thereby wearing a 'virtual groove' through the computer/phone for consultations as many of us do today, or through hands-on, face-to-face visits as others of us do with patients/clients/'consumers'. "The Grate Groove" grew from that seed of thought.

Many conventional practitioners have open minds to integrating with alternative/progressive providers and want to learn and so we focused on getting to know batches of providers in 2010-12. Some stuck, some did not. And now, in 2013, those that stuck are 'launching' out to do community outreach to the public, with the Sweet Heart Run and Expo in Fruita, being like a 'coming out party' of sorts! And so we are aware, we are a work in progress, I hope you enjoy the process with us! ~ Mardy

The hundreds of RUNNERS received GIFT BAGS with instructions in each one to come here and learn about the items The Grate Groove of the Grand Valley providers are giving YOU for doing your part in FUNdraising for health and wellness in our community.

This was the EASIEST place to give instructions to 'start', and I'll be providing links to the areas of the forums here at Lumigrate which apply as 'for more information'. There is even a forum on 'community involvement" information. If you have ANY questions or difficulties or comments -- we love compliments and feedback about doing things better too -- the contact us comes to me (Mardy Ross), or you can email mardy@lumigrate.com or pick up the phone and call. Again the # is 970/773-7921 (it's a GoogleVoice, so people say it's a cross between a secretary and an answering machine that will answer.)

NOW, here's the SURPRISE! EVERYONE who learned about The Grate Groove of the Grand Valley because of this Sweet Heart event is getting something from EACH of the following providers. Just follow to their website and contact them if you're interested in receiving the service or product offered by them to YOU.

For the RUNNERS, you get MORE -- YOU contributed your $ to FUNdraising for the event and put in your time and energy ...  (might we call it the "Sweat" Heart Run?

CALL the # above (970/773-7921) and leave a VM  with your

name

# from the race

Phone #/ e-address.  Your information will remain with Lumigrate and not be used for other purposes beyond ours to reach people who are interested in local, quality health services. IF you do not want to be on that e-list, just say so on the message and we'll not add you, but we WILL add you to the 'pot' for getting your FREE stuff!

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, HERE IS WHAT EVERYONE IS GETTING FROM THE GROOVE PROVIDERS (and check back, this list is growing.  This was our FIRST event ever, so we're 'creating how we do this' as we go!)

Crossroads Fine Foods/Crossroads drinks (Fine Wines, Spirits, Beers, Waters, etc.) 10% off entire purchase and 15% off if you purchase a case of wine (they always give a 10% discount on case of wine so this is an added 5%). FRESH seafood from Cape Cod, Florida Keys, Hawaii and Alaska and they use vendors picky about waters and etc., natural meats, artisan cheeses, including other animals than bovine/cow, such as goat, sheep, etc. Other special offers on their Facebook page.  FB page link is:

www.facebook.com/CrossroadsWineandSpirits (and there you can find their website link, etc.)

NOTE: Crossroads' owners, Jerry and Eleni Sica, provide a generous gifting program to organizations on BOTH sides of the business, so you can make one or both have a % of sales come to The Grate Groove of the Grand Valley, and your $ comes to us to support more efforts such as "Project Billie Green". Our revenues so far from it are funding supplements identified to be of benefit to her currently. Or chose another of the many organizations they are 'giving back to'.

I am providing links to contributions they have made in Lumigrate.com's forums, which sets you up to follow from their signature areas to learn more about them and what they can "do" for YOU in health and wellness.

From Dr King: Making lasting changes, versus 'trying': written article at  www.lumigrate.com/forum/trying-time-making-weight-loss-or-any-change-keeps and video Strategies for Lasting Change at our videos tab, you can go watch a snippet and register and download if you wish.

From Dr Schulte-Barclay: A short and sweet article/topic about integrating her services with other professionals:

This concludes the providers who were asked to participate in this initial 'event' where we had to figure out how many booths would we need, whose schedule would allow it, who was interested, how was it going to work, etc. THERE ARE MANY OTHERS WHO HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE GROOVE WHO WE'LL BE BRINGING BACK 'into the mix' as we go forward with future provider/consumer learning events and community outreach.

You might ask what a provider has to 'do' to be asked to participate in the Groove. It is a fairly subjective, informal process related to the many small, informal networks of 'who refers to whom'.  The Groove's ULTIMATE goal is 'integration' with MDs/DOs and other allopathically trained providers who are receptive to collaborations with other types of providers besides the ones that insurance typically pays for (meaning 'altnerative'). This is a time of GREAT change in the US and locally related to what consumers KNOW and what they WANT and what they DEMAND. The Groove believes we can help make that shift occur faster and will less energy/time/money expended on the health care system, so we 'filter' the alternatives and STARTED with those 'just on the line or outside the line a little bit', which would be accepted as valid providers, valid experts by those 'inside the box' called 'allpathic, Western medicine'.

Below, please look at the list of ALL who have participated in at least ONE Grate Groove of the Grand Valley lunch, dinner discussion, hands-on-learning what our techniques are or simply 'chillin' with an evening of music in the summers to get to know each other a bit more: (If I missed anybody or something not correct and as you'd like it to be presented, let me know, I'll add/change/subtract!)

Lani Wallace and Carolyn Lampshire, licensed estheticians who practice using sound/vibration, aromatherapy, etc

Analii Cunningham, movement therapy

Gusti Bionai, massage therapist, energy medicine worker, and medical visionary

Catherine Fenske, spirituality coach

Landon, biofeedback technologist from Behavioral Health and Wellness in the Primary Care Partners Building

Ivan Alkes, medical doctor, who suggested providers who network at the hospital don't know those who don't.

Monica Cullinane, yoga, and nutrition consultant

Paula Anderson, food/eating consultant

Bryce Christianson, doctor of chiropractic and only local certified practitioner of Active Release Technique

Jeff McCloskey, doctor of chiropractic and only local certifed practitioner of Neurologic Releief Center Technique

Gwen Pettit, physical therapist and certified life coach

Paule Stiefler, medical visionary and energy worker

Jim Kennedy, holistic dentist

Liz Kennedy, registered nurse, cardiac screenings and integrative nutritional and conventional solutions advisor

Kevin King - civil activist interested in health and government and co-founder of SWIG: Safe Water is Great, a subgroup of The Grate Groove focusing on health-related water issues related to adding fluoride to water primarily.  Jim Kennedy, Jeff McCloskey, Mardy Ross/me are the fabulous four cofounders of SWIG.

Jerry and Eleni Sica, whose concern about quality not quantity when it comes to food and drink they provide at their stores (one of which is ALSO a GJ Business Incubator client, as are Lumigrate and I), and Jerry's innate ability to be an EDUCATOR, with a concern for PEOPLE related to the products sold, lead to our expanding the groove in 2012 to include retail food/drink providers. (educate the vendors and they change what they sell, it helps the 'village' to change, is my thinking. Let's see if I'm right!)

Paula King, doctor of psychology and certified practitioner of Heart Math

April Schulte-Barclay, doctor of acupuncture and oriental medicine

Maria Wilder-Doyle, licensed marriage and family therapist

Karen Floyd, registered pharmacist and compounding and natural wellness pharmacy entrepreneur in GJ

Mrs and Dr Kevin Fitzgerld, yoga instructor and massage therapist and medical doctor/ medical director of the local health insurance company, respectively

Sheri King, the 'only normal person' (her works when introducing herself, meaning she was at the table with the six medical people listed above her name), who let us know through her input and questions that having educated, concerned consumers sit around a table that had medical providers as well would be time/energy/money well spent to learn TOGETHER what the others know from their side of things.

Last but not least, me, Mardy Ross, occupational therapist/health educator previously; 'Yenta'/connector of people and concepts whether that be provider - to - provider or consumer to provider or provider to consumer. "Health information concierge".

THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE COME AT LEAST ONCE, AND THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE READ THIS; I LOOK FORWARD TO WHAT WE CAN ALL ACCOMPLISH TOGETHER IN HOWEVER MUCH OR LITTLE WE CONTRIBUTE.  I hope that the consumers reading this will want to hear MORE about us and participate in whatever we 'do' in the future! ~~ Mardy

Project Billie Green Collaboration Project at Sweet Heart Expo

Please take a moment and look at Lumigrate's "YOU!"/collaborative care model, below.  In 2012, I became aware of a woman named Billie Green, whose name we are using with her permission, as she understands that Lumigrate and the Grate Groove are 'all about' helping educate and move things forwards/progress things related to health care locally and beyond.

In January of this year, we essentially put Billie in that central YOU spot, with my assistance as needed, and started looking at who she had for health care. Having been injured at work in 2009 and completed workers compensation with a list of restrictions which has lead to all job applications not turning into employment for month after year, Billie came to Grand Junction where her son lived. She was fortunate for the Marillac Clinic. Her preferred primary means of health care prior to her incident was chiropractic and Marillac had those services. Except there was a small copay which she could not afford and she was unaware that she could talk with them about that.

By the time I'd helped her iron that out, they were not longer providing chiropractic care because the clinic policy was going to require immunizations for influenza for all service providers. Since she WAS at the top of the list, we made arrangements to see one of the chiropractors (I figured if he was freed up from being at Marillac he might just do what he did at Marillac but at his clinic, not theirs.)  He agreed; that was Dr Jeff McCloskey. Rapid progress was made and we decided to write about it at Lumigrate.com on a topic that I'm providing the link to, below. Billie writes HERstory too! And we'll be posting updates as she goes to other providers and progresses along. You can literally feel her joy through her written words, and I thank her and Dr Jeff and the other providers who are chipping in on Project Billie Green Collaboration.

It has been warming, and since we'll be at the Sweet Heart Run and Expo, we'll be starting a gift basket for Billie which will be at our booth, from those who wish to contribute a service or product. (I tried to hint real hard about Crossroads Fine Foods adding in a chocolate bar, they have very high quality dark chocolate! Dr Jeff can AK test her muscle strength to see if it's a good thing for her system or not even! Yes, we find entertainment wherever we go! ) .

So NOW, Billie's YOU model has MD (through Marillac Clinic), DC (Dr Jeff McCloskey), movement therapy (Analii Cunningham and Kohava Howard), psychology/health/life coach (Dr Paula King), life coach and PT (Gwen Pettit), and health information/provider concierge (with 15 years OT/health education experience) (Mardy Ross/me).

And we've not even asked more of the Grate Groove providers because 'her dance card is full' with those just mentioned ... and the best part is? She has been able to do a couple of jumping jacks and jog a few steps -- seems like she might be literally with a full dance card soon!

Link to the complete story about Billie's fall (literally) and rising again (so far so GRATE!) .... www.lumigrate.com/forum/out-health-care-crack-billie-green-now-groove-grate-groove-grand-valley
