Probiotics protect your intestinal tract from many things. One of the most important things that probiotics do is to accumulate around the Peyer's patches in the intestinal tract. The Peyer's patches are our immune system in the intestinal tract, and it is the largest part of our immune system due to food being our biggest exposure to infections.

It is critical that you keep your probiotics (flora) of the gut healthy, happy, and in large numbers. Our diet affects the gut health, and one of the biggest to be aware of is meats that contain antibiotics, as they kill the probiotics. Make sure you take probiotics (capsules, yogurt, other fermented foods, etc.) daily!  A last note: this information applies to cancer prevention.
