The power of the mind was brilliantly and quickly shown to me with 'the lemon exercise' in the late 1990s when going to work for an innovative driving rehabilitation program. The owner had been a top-rated/ winning race car driver who had gotten into some 'outside the box stuff' to increase his performance and he attributed it whole-heartedly to his successes in racing. He then, tragically, had a daughter die in a car crash when 16 when a passenger with a peer, when on on a date. The father felt that it was due to the poor skills that teens are turned loose behind the wheel with, and he developed a way to get a ton of skills over two days with drivers who preferably have never touched a steering wheel or foot pedals before they come to the class. With their car, and parents leaving them in the hands of the program they've selected to go with for drivers education.

So it is what I requested from Dr. Paula King when she came to videotape something for us to demonstrate the power of the mind, back in our formative year of Lumigrate, before we even had a name yet, or the website being put together. It's part of our YouTube channel's offerings from 2008/9.

I've had reason to find this link on YouTube for someone I recently met who has been thrust into the world of cancer and is going to utilize 'western medicine', so is expecting to have nausea.  While there are Rxs for that being given, I said 'what about learning meditation?'. You see, there are so many applications if people develop their skill with the powers of the mind.

That wasn't part of the treatment plan being presented by their team, and I know that my having learned and practiced meditation over decades now was one of the greatest tools in my toolbox when I was rendered very nauseous after a surgery that got a little bungled on the aftercare side. It didn't change the nausea, but it changed my relationship mentally with the situation. It was not just that, there was a difficult roommate with a nice but large and attentive family who visited from 6 am to 11 pm and read her the menu for soft foods over and over. She was confused and would say 'I want a hamburger'. You know how it is when you're nauseous, you really don't want to see or think about or HEAR about food? Well, I was glad for my abilities with meditation, even when under medication's haze.

That was in 2006, in December, and I came to believe it was 'meant to be' because it literally came to me when I was clearing that 'someone has to do something about this, what happens to people who go into the hospital not as good as this one, in a city not known for leading health care as this one, to people who don't know as much as I know about how to navigate it?' and my next thought before I was out the door of my room to the nurses station to ask for discharge orders (finally) was 'maybe I need to do something about it'. And within a month I was signed up and beginning a class at the business incubator, another one of the things about Grand Junction, Colorado that is highly rated.

Within a year I was out of the insurance-based therapy clinic practice I'd started in 2005 and into an innovative, integrative clinic which did not stick to the agreed upon plan overall so one by one those of us renting and collaborating separated leaving the clinic to go on and be something that helped a different segment of the population than what we'd all said we were going to do together under one roof.

Which lead me to keep in contact with some of the providers locally but also pull to Lumigrate's forums other experts from around the United States (and one from another country, but we found it difficult with the different laws and banking, etc to have them be able to be reimbursed for their expertise by people from the US so I have stuck to US providers since). It took just over a year to get Lumigrate on the Internet after helping get the clinic -- and it's seminar series -- off the ground. And Dr King was part of that and has a good selection of topics in the forums as well, written for the local free press newspaper which allows them to be posted on other websites.

Here's the link to this very short, dynamic video from one of the nation's top guided imagery / power of the mind experts who we were fortunate to have in our midst before and after starting Lumigrate!

I found it by going to YouTube and entering in Search "Paula King, Lemon Exercise"; just putting her name didn't get this clip to come up as an option.  I like to tell people how I find the links that I post so that others can find things if the link I provide is not available to them.

PS -- I suggested the lemon exercise when she came to film a segment about the power of the mind with chronic pain and illness which we were going to use for a fibromyalgia class we were hoping to have become part of the services at the integrative center Lumigrate was part of at it's inception.  I'd used the lemon exercise at MasterDrive a decade before when I was their driving rehabilitation specialist -- at MasterDrive, they incorporated 'state of mind' into the foundation of their program.  (Simply put: When you are confident in your abilities you will have your best response from your brain/body.)

Enjoy!  I aim for Lumigrate's content overall to be progressive, valid, streamlined and FUN and this clip meets all those things!

Here's a picture of Paula in our studio filming "Strategies for Lasting Change", and please check her out on our Videos tab ... (here's a link to the videos area for your convenience ... www.lumigrate.com/catalog/seminars).

We aim with Lumigrate to be valid, progressive, streamlined and FUN, and the way she teaches about resistance with a handwriting exercise is really fun.  I got to be in the room with a bunch of marriage and family therapists/social workers when Paula taught the handwriting activity to demonstrate incorporating change and the room LIT UP. As it had in our studio, but maybe that was the lights required for recording.

Note: October 21, 2014 I edited this to make it more current and appropriate for today's YOUsers of Lumigrate. Just over 1,100 views of this page were counted on the counter that that time. I like knowing that Dr King has reached the number of people she has due to her giving of her time and energy to Lumigrate in the years we collaborated. Gratefully! Mardy
