Here's the link to a video on YouTube which I think is the best, fast 'primer' about meditation (or reminder/reviewer) I've seen.
In my work with patients when practicing under insurance-based medicine as an occupational therapist, a typical evaluation / treatment was about collecting information about them and their getting to know me and my philosophy about how to get better or better at managing their condition, and then I'd teach them mindfulness meditation; if we could get them started on it the first day, then they'd be getting good at it within a week or two, depending upon how much they practiced. And that was the average length of time I would see people -- I was all for doing thorough treatment but not 'milking the system'.
If they got this piece 'under their belts', they'd really be able to get in touch with their inner guide, that 'doctor inside of you'. And then the person/patient teams up with providers who have mutual respect for the relationship of teacher/student -- and that goes BOTH ways. I believe I have learned something from each person I have worked with in my career just as in the rest of life. I hope you agree!
