What I LOVE about Deirdre Rawlings, ND's Info on Fibromyalgia and Food
"We all have a need for connection and relationships. Do your heart good this month; allow yourself to love and be loved. Health is your most prized possession. Protect it with love. Handle it and you with care." is my favorite part of Deirdre Rawlings' Newsletter, Volume 1.1! She goes on to say:
"You can take heart knowing that the number one goal for every edition of Foods for Fibromyalgia newsletter is to support you on your healing path! Each edition will contain all of the latest cutting-edge health and nutrition information, research, resources, recipes, tools, tips, strategies, and more, that's available on fibromyalgia. We know and understand what you are going through and we're here to assist you in easing your pain, fighting your fatigue, and supporting you to get your life back on track and to be healthy."
Yesterday was Valentine's Day and it's very interesting to see how little interest there is in reading the blog posts about heart health that I made. This is a 'fibromyalgia following' for SURE, but there are many things that apply to one and the other. I encourage you to follow the link to read the newsletter, as it has information about libido, sleep, magnesium, AND has a healthy chocolate mouse recipe!
Both Dr. Rawlings and I worked at least 'full days yesterday', because we love our businesses and are committed to advancing health care through our customers, who are the consumers and providers looking for progressive and valid information. To my knowledge, neither of us have taken a day off in the month that we've been collaborating related to her being the nutrition expert for Lumigrate.com. She's creating the content for two new websites and even though it was a particularly busy time, she appreciates Lumigrate and the Grate Group of followers and wanted to contribute to what is going on in the Forums area.
This might be a good time to ask: How hard are YOU working this year on YOUR health? Are you expecting the providers around you to be 'right on' all the time and expecting as much of yourself? I hope SO. Because you're the one that is in control over what you do with your time, energy and money. You have the control in who you chose to be on your team as well, which becomes complicated with the differing financial / insurance situations I realize, but even within that there are 'choices' that we maybe sometimes don't initially consider as such. This is a time to really be taking a long look inside ourselves individually and communally as it relates to health care. And I hope I do MY best with my own health and with Lumigrate, in bringing valid, progressive, streamlined and FUN information and people to the website and facebook pages so that many can benefit by learning and growing. That is a 'head thing' and a 'heart thing', and requires your spirit to be involved as well, which is why 'integrative medicine' is about 'mind, body, spirit'.
After I get this posted for you all to read, I'm going to go over to the Forums / Fibromyalgia / Imaginary Patients area and finish up / hatch "Neva", a 35 year old woman who, like anyone, has this one life to deal with and do with and live, and who has a diagnosis of 'fibromyalgia' as part of that. I'm then going to let everyone know Neva is 'there' and invite everyone to go brainstorm what they might suggest she 'do' to get well. My intention is to create an interesting, dynamic and realistic learning environment that allows the professionals who will come write comfortably with the suggestions they make, and be equally as inviting for the OTHER experts -- and those are the people who have fibromyalgia or other medical conditions, their family and friends who are coming to learn and share, or anyone who has an interest in chronic pain.
Ilene Spector, DO is in Grand Junction treating patients today and tomorrow and I have time scheduled with her to not only have her continue working on me and being able to share what a 'cranial osteopath' contributes to my health care team, but to get her set up to contribute in the Forums area, at least for now with her 'take' on Neva, along with whatever else anyone else wants to write. So please stay tuned here this week for these developments!
Below are two things: The link for Dr. Rawlings' website/newsletter archive section and I HIGHLY encourage everyone to click on it and go read! And below that is what you would receive on facebook if you were part of her facebook following, and there is a link within that for her facebook information. Let's really grab hands, and onto the rope of information she is throwing us, and get better together! www.foodsforfibromyalgia.com/information-center/newsletter-archive/item/164-newsletter-vol-11-february-2010.html#three
How to lower your risk for heart disease and decrease inflammation through food & nutrition
It's now well recognized by experts that an anti-inflammatory diet can be a powerful tool for reducing your risk of heart disease. As a bonus, the same approach can help lower your risk of many other conditions as well, including cancer, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, and depression.

Thanks, Mardy -- Its always a pleasure to write about nutritional matters in areas that concern fibromyalgia sufferers. This particular group of people are very near and dear to my own heart and so I am always on the alert for all of the latest and greatest information and research that is available to help them to not just improve but recover and heal from this debilitating condition completely.
I have helped numerous clients to fully regain their lives and their health back and this gives me much encouragement to continue on the path. Holistic nutrition involves not just the physical, but also the mental and emotional and I like to incorporate the whole person into my healing approach and modalities.
I look forward to sharing more with the LUMIGRATE again soon.
Health be with you,
Deirdre

Mardy and Deirdre:
You both put in such wonderful work and I thank you but I do have a question if I may.
There are times, not often mind you, that I'm just not up to par. I'm not physically or mentally able to do "the work" it takes to maintain the health I've gained. I've worked so hard and I wouldn't necessarily call it depression persay. I'm just tired. My brain is full, my body is dragging, I'm fatigued for no reason since I'm sleeping fairly well (I think) and I'm extremely agitated.
My medications have not changed though I'm thinking perhaps one of them isn't working any longer and I should get of it. My last blood work showed a decent balance of hormones but feritin was up again (inflamation). I've cut back on the citrus (too acidic right now for my joints) and increased the avocado (haas of course). Oh, and I'm limiting the night shades as well. Any other thoughts?
Take care and be well.
Ellen
Hi Ellen:
I can certainly understand and empathize with you. Having fibromyalgia is challenging enough as it is to your energy levels and is usually the first place to feel its effects.
With ferritin levels high, yes, inflammation is evident, and this could be caused from a variety of things, in particular oxidation. Adding more anti-oxidants to the diet, particularly by way of fresh fruits and vegetables, juices, smoothies, any way that you can take them into your body daily, will be of assistance. Antioxidant supplements include: vitamins E, C, Alpha lipoic acid, selenium, co-Q 10, and others. Eating any white flour products could pose a problem as these are enriched with iron which causes oxidation also. Its not only what we add, we must eliminate those things causing stress to our bodies, and therefore our whole systems, including not just the physical, but also the emotional, mental, and spiritual.
Without fully know what medications you are taking, I wouldn’t make off the cuff suggestions because I really like to get a complete health history first which tells me what/ how you’re eating/ sleeping/ supplements/ drugs you take etc./ body type/ blood panel/ biochemistry, and more. I take a holistic approach and make sure the recommendations fit YOUR body, lifestyle and goals only. Make sense?
I highly recommend the Eat to Beat Fibromyalgia group coaching tele-seminar system that addresses all of this and a whole lot more. If you are signed up on our Facebook Group: FOODS FOR FIBROMYALGIA, You will receive an invitation to attend the free tele-seminar for a sneak peek into what it is all about. Stay tuned for more to come soon on that. Also, feel free to email me if you'd like to have a Fibromyalgia Breakthrough Strategy session with me personally -- we can go deeply into what's going on with your health symptoms and some of their causes and give you some immediate strategies to help you right away. It's the best value for one-on-one time with me available and I only allocate a few hours a week of my schedule for them. Email me if you are interested at: deirdre@nutri-living.com. I invite you to also visit the site and be sure to sign up for the free bi-monthly newsletter that's filled with cutting edge information, resources, tools, and more: www.foodsforfibromyalgia.com
